Former Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has joined Bengaluru-based gaming studio LightFury Games as an investor, adding another major name from Indian cricket to the company as it prepares to launch its upcoming cricket game, eCricket. Sharma will also feature as an officially licensed playable player in the game.

The announcement comes at an important time for LightFury Games, with eCricket scheduled to enter a phased closed beta in September 2026. The studio says more than 300,000 users have already signed up for the game, giving the upcoming title a strong level of interest even before its wider release. Rohit Sharma now joins a growing list of well-known Indian cricketers who have invested in LightFury Games. The group includes MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Tilak Varma and Sai Sudharsan. These players participated as strategic investors in the company’s $11 million pre-Series A funding round, which was announced in April.

LightFury Games has not revealed how much Rohit Sharma has invested in the company or the specific terms of his investment. However, his involvement adds another strong connection between professional cricket and the gaming industry, particularly as LightFury gets closer to putting eCricket in the hands of players.

For Rohit, the connection with eCricket will also go beyond his role as an investor. His inclusion as an officially licensed playable player means fans will be able to use the former India captain inside the upcoming cricket game. Having real world players officially represented in the game is expected to be an important part of LightFury’s approach as it looks to create a more authentic cricket gaming experience.

Rohit Sharma said that the values required in high performance sport including preparation, precision and continuous improvement, are also reflected in what LightFury Games is building with eCricket. His comments highlight the studio’s attempt to connect the competitive mindset of professional sport with the development of a modern cricket game.

LightFury Games was founded in 2024 by Karan Shroff, Anurag Banerjee and Tina Balachandran. The Bengaluru-based studio is focused on AAA game development and currently has more than 120 developers and industry professionals working across its projects. The company previously raised $8.5 million in a seed funding round led by Blume Ventures in 2024, before securing its $11 million pre-Series A round earlier this year.

The studio is positioning eCricket as its flagship title and has been building a roster of professional cricket talent around the game. Bringing players such as Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah and others into the company’s investor group gives the project a strong connection to the sport it is trying to recreate digitally.

The upcoming closed beta will be an important stage for the game because it will give selected players an opportunity to experience eCricket before its broader launch. It should also give LightFury Games valuable feedback about gameplay, performance and the overall experience before the developers move towards a wider release. The 300,000-plus sign-ups suggest that there is already significant curiosity around eCricket. However, the real challenge for LightFury will be turning that early interest into a game that can keep players coming back after launch. Cricket fans have plenty of expectations when it comes to gameplay, realism, controls and presentation, so the closed beta could be an important test for the studio.

LightFury Games co founder Karan Shroff described Rohit Sharma’s investment as a defining milestone for the company and said the studio wants to demonstrate that India can build major game franchises for a global audience. With the September beta approaching, Rohit Sharma’s investment in LightFury Games gives eCricket another major boost ahead of launch. The combination of professional cricket stars, a growing development team and strong early registrations has made the game one of the more interesting upcoming cricket titles to watch.

The next big step is now the closed beta. Once players get their hands on eCricket, we’ll have a much better idea of whether LightFury Games can deliver on the expectations surrounding its ambitious cricket project.
